SAMmobile 150 (RD-150) Vehicle-Mounted Radiation Detection System

A flexible, plug-and-play vehicle-mounted radiation detection system (VMRDS) built for rapid deployment and easy transfer between vehicles. The SAMmobile 150 (RD-150) scales to three high-sensitivity NaI modules, corrects background in real time, and tags every detection with GPS for color-contour radiological mapping across freeways, choke points, parking lots, and covert routes.

1Overview

The SAMmobile 150 (RD-150) is a vehicle-mounted radiation detection system, or VMRDS, designed to deploy fast and move between vehicles without a fixed install. It suits dynamic detection geometry: freeway monitoring, choke points, parking lots, and covert surveillance, where the source moves and the platform has to keep up.

At its core sits a high-performance MCA with DSP electronics and a high-voltage control system, driven by a 32-bit RISC processor for data acquisition and processing. A shock-reducing enclosure matches the photomultiplier tube to the NaI detector for stable performance in motion. The firmware applies a proprietary Wavelet Transform with concurrent background correction and subtraction, and second-by-second analysis keeps the system responsive as the vehicle drives through changing backgrounds.

Verification notes. Confirm the following against the latest SAMmobile 150 datasheet before release. The product page lists operating temperature as "20 C to -50 C"; verify the correct low-to-high ordering. Neutron tube count and type are not published (the page lists "Gamma and Neutron Detection" as a feature only). Total combined crystal volume across modules and the dose-rate range are not published. The app name appears on the page as both PeakGO and PeakAbout; verify the canonical app name with engineering. Do not publish an unconfirmed value.

2Key Features

  • Modular, scalable architecture with high-sensitivity NaI detectors.
  • Plug-and-play detector design for quick setup and reconfiguration.
  • Seamless vehicle-to-vehicle transfer, with no fixed install required.
  • Integrates with any existing vehicle; vehicle, marine, aerial, or crane variants.
  • Local or remote control.
  • Real-time background auto-correction and the industry's lowest sigma trigger.
  • Industrial shock absorption for detection in motion.
  • Gamma and neutron detection.
  • GPS integrated mapping with color-contour radiological mapping.
  • App integration for real-time isotope ID, GPS-tagged detections, and reachback alerting.

3Detector Array & Performance

Each SAMmobile 150 module carries a Gamma 2x4x16 in NaI detector. Crystal sizes are available in 2x4x16 and 4x4x16 inches. The architecture is modular and plug-and-play: scale from one module up to three units or systems to widen coverage or sharpen geometry for a given deployment. Each module weighs 58 lbs and measures 29.7 x 19.8 x 9.9 in.

The system identifies isotopes against the ANSI isotope list and ANSI isotope class, both color coded, and returns the first three isotopes in real time in under one second. A proprietary Wavelet Transform algorithm drives identification, with real-time background correction and analysis-based subtraction. Calibration is multi-peak and automatic, performed on each module individually.

5System & Software

The SAMmobile 150 mounts as a self-contained enclosure that integrates with any existing vehicle and transfers between platforms without rework. Beyond ground vehicles, it ships in marine, aerial, and crane variants. Power comes from an internal Li-Ion battery or from the vehicle, with battery runtime greater than 24 hours, and the system runs under local or remote control.

App and reachback

The companion app delivers real-time isotope and isotope-class identification, color-coded spectral peaks, GPS tagging of detections, photo and video reporting with annotation, pop-up isotope guidance, and push-to-reachback alerting. It offers optional integration with existing alarm, comms, and command-and-control systems. The app name appears on the product page as both PeakGO and PeakAbout (verify the canonical name).

Mapping, reporting, and networking

GPS integrated mapping produces color-contour radiological maps from coordinate-tagged reports, so a drive becomes a map of where activity rose. The system supports full ANSI N42 report capability and is FEMA RadResponder enabled. Optional integration ties it into existing alarm, comms, and C2 systems. Web-based training is available at academy.berkeleynucleonics.com.
