1Overview

The Model 866-M is a compact, flange-mountable frequency synthesizer covering 1 MHz to 40 GHz with output power from -10 to +25 dBm. It switches in 85 µs with Option FS and holds SSB phase noise of -145 dBc/Hz at 20 kHz offset from a 1 GHz carrier, and -125 dBc/Hz at 10 GHz.

The module weighs about 1.3 lb and measures 6.5 by 2.4 by 1 inches, drawing roughly 20 W with passive cooling. It is controlled over Ethernet through graphical software or SCPI. Multiple units cascade in a master-slave arrangement for phase-coherent multi-channel operation.

2Key Features

  • Small flange-mount module
  • CW and pulse modulation
  • Low power consumption, passive cooling
  • Low phase noise
  • Multi-channel configurable and cascadable in master-slave configuration
  • Phase coherent across channels

3Frequency & Output Power

Coverage runs continuously from 1 MHz to 40 GHz. Output is settable from -10 to +25 dBm in 0.5 dB steps. Frequency resolution reaches 0.001 Hz, with calibrated accuracy of ±30 ppb and temperature stability of ±100 ppb across the 0 to 50 °C operating range.

4Phase Noise & Spectral Purity

SSB phase noise is specified at 20 kHz offset for two representative carriers.

CarrierOffsetSSB phase noise
1 GHz20 kHz-145 dBc/Hz
10 GHz20 kHz-125 dBc/Hz
Verification notes. Harmonics and spurious are not published on the product page. Confirm against datasheet v105. (verify)

5Frequency Switching & Agility

Standard switching is 500 µs. Option FS brings switching to 85 µs for agile applications. Frequency resolution of 1 mHz and phase resolution of 0.1° support fine tuning and coherent phase control.

6Modulation

The 866-M provides CW and pulse modulation.

Verification notes. Sweep and list modes are not described on the product page. Confirm modulation and sweep support against the latest datasheet. (verify)
