Pulsed Current Source

Model 507 and Model 508 Current Pulsers

Two legacy current pulsers from the Directed Energy Division, covered together on one page. The Model 507 delivers wide current pulses with a high current slew rate into a 44 V compliance. The Model 508 delivers faster, lower-voltage current pulses across a wide repetition-rate and pulse-width range.

1Overview

The Model 507 and Model 508 are legacy current pulsers from the Directed Energy Division. They share a common role, delivering controlled current pulses into low-impedance loads, but cover different ranges of pulse width, repetition rate, and compliance voltage.

The Model 507 produces wide current pulses, from 100 µs to 100 ms, with a high current slew rate above 2.5 A/µs into a compliance of 44 V, at repetition rates from DC up to roughly 1 Hz. The Model 508 produces faster pulses at a lower compliance of 20 V or less, with pulse widths from 5 µs to 100 s, repetition rates from 0.01 kHz to 100 kHz, and a rise time of 550 ns at 6 A into a 150 ohm load.

Directed Energy, Inc. is now a division of Berkeley Nucleonics. Both pulsers ship from the same San Rafael, California build with one support path.

2How It Works

Both models regulate current into a load and take their pulse timing from an external trigger. The Model 507 favors wide, high-slew current pulses into a higher-voltage compliance, which suits slowly repeated, large-charge pulses. The Model 508 favors faster, lower-voltage pulses across a broad span of repetition rates and pulse widths.

Verify. Detailed control modes, connector pinouts, monitor scaling, and setpoint ranges are not included here because no published datasheet PDF was available at the time of writing. These details will be added once verified against the BNC datasheet.

4Output Protection & Safety

As with all Directed Energy Division current pulsers, the Model 507 and Model 508 must be operated within their safe operating area. The SOA defines the allowed combination of current, pulse width, and repetition rate that keeps the pulser and the connected load within thermal and electrical limits.

Caution. Operating outside the safe operating area can cause permanent damage to the instrument, the load, or both. The full SOA curves will be published with the verified datasheet. Contact Berkeley Nucleonics for SOA data before setting an operating point.

5Control & Interfaces

Both models take pulse timing from an external trigger and set output current from a control input. Complete connector and control detail will be confirmed against the published datasheet.

Verify. Connector types, pinouts, and monitor outputs are pending verification and are not listed here to avoid stating unconfirmed values.

6Applications

The Model 507 and Model 508 suit current pulsing of low-impedance loads where a specific pulse-width and repetition-rate range is needed:

  • Model 507. Wide, high-slew current pulses into a 44 V compliance for slowly repeated, large-charge applications.
  • Model 508. Faster, lower-voltage current pulses across a broad span of repetition rates and pulse widths.
  • Laser diode and low-impedance loads. Controlled current delivery for diode drive and component test.
